I was listening to Catholic Radio in the morning today and they mentioned how most people in their poll believe that horror movies are harmful. While that may be true for a lot, maybe most horror movies, I don’t think that’s the case for Bird Box. Actually I think it’s quite the opposite; I think Bird Box is a Catholic allegory.
Hear me out–superficially it might not seem Catholic at all at first, but if you delve deeper there’s a lot of truth and beauty to it.
The Demons of Bird Box: A Symbol for Sin
When people in the movie experience the demons, it changes their eyes and they see it as beautiful. Similarly with sin, when people experience it, at first it might seem as very pleasurable, enjoyable, attractive. Sin (distancing yourself from God) changes the way you see the world until, like the demons in Bird Box, you destroy yourself. In Bird Box the characters would destroy their bodies, commit suicide; in the real world sin destroys the soul.
Home: The Church
People in Bird Box are usually safe at home–that it is until Gary gets there. Home in this case represents the Church. When we stay true to the Church, when we stay away from sin, we are safe within God. However, like Gary, there are also people that have unfortunately infiltrated sin into the church, namely the priests that have abused the faithful. Like Gary, they have at times successfully destroyed the lives of the people inside the Church, the home. In contrast there’s Douglas, a character that at times seems intolerant, grouchy strict, much like how the world views the rules of the Catholic Church. However, these commandments are liberating, life-giving, because without them, or when they’re ignored like Douglas, we risk letting the devil creep in. Also, kudos to Douglas for doing the sign of the cross in the movie and not being afraid to speak against evil even if it cost him his life.
The Sanctity of Life
In both the movie A Quiet Place or Bird Box, the main characters are pregnant while going through the worst imaginable post-apocalyptic situations. Today’s culture would say that unless you’re under the best circumstances (have money, a career, can guarantee a life without suffering for the child), you shouldn’t keep the baby. These women went against that notion, because even in the worst of situations, who can guarantee that it will stay that way? Who can guarantee that the life of the baby and/or the mother will be one of only suffering? Even if there is a lot of suffering, it doesn’t have to be viewed negatively; suffering is transformative and fortifies us. In fact, Sandra Bullock’s character Malorie fights harder to stay alive because of the children that she has to take care of. Had she not had that driving force, perhaps she would have perished early in the movie.
Sacrificial Love
Multiple characters in Bird Box displayed efforts of sacrificial love throughout the movie. First Charlie who threw himself at his friend who wanted to force the others to see the demons. Then Douglas for dying in an attempt to fight of Gary who wanted to do the same as Charlie’s friend. Tom also dies in order to save Malorie and the children. These acts are all reflect the sacrificial love of Jesus, dying to save others, showing that true love isn’t just a feeling, but rather wanting the best for others even when it’s not comfortable, even when it means dying to the self.
Birds: Angels/Conscience
In the movie, the birds warn the characters when the demons are near. Likewise, in our lives angels and our conscience whisper when we’re near the occasion of sin, but like the birds in Bird Box, a lot of times we keep these whispers caged or in a box. Sometimes it’s more comfortable that way, to just follow what everyone else is doing, but just going with the flow of the culture and ignoring the holy whispers can have disastrous results.
When Malorie and the kids are closest to the sanctuary, they start hearing luring voices that seek to convince them to take off their blindfolds. When we’re closest to victory against evil we’re the most tempted. But alas, over the luring voices they choose to follow the song of birds, the true beauty and salvation. When they finally reach safety, they find themselves among the blind, those who are marginalized and found lacking in society end up being the blessed. Those who had been poor over the past years with little food, those who had been mourning the loss of majority of their loved ones, the meek blind, those who hungered and thirst for righteousness amongst a place that had been contaminated by evil, the children pure in heart, the peacemakers that were persecuted by the ones who wanted them to see the demons–they were blessed.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Bird Box: ¿La película más católica de la historia?
ADVERTENCIA: Si no has visto la película y no quieres escuchar el final, ve a verla ahora.
Hoy estaba escuchando la estación de radio católica por la mañana y mencionaron que la mayoría de las personas en su encuesta creen que las películas de terror son perjudiciales. Si bien eso puede ser cierto de muchas, tal vez de la mayoría de las películas de terror, no creo que ese sea el caso de Bird Box. En realidad creo que es todo lo contrario; creo que Bird Box es una alegoría católica.
Escúchame: superficialmente, puede que al principio no parezca católica, pero si ves más a fondo, hay mucha verdad y belleza en ella.
Los demonios de Bird Box: símbolo del pecado
Cuando la gente en la película ve a los demonios, cambian sus ojos y los ven como algo hermoso. De manera similar con el pecado, cuando las personas lo viven, al principio puede parecer muy placentero, agradable, atractivo. El pecado (distanciarse de Dios) cambia la forma en la que ves el mundo hasta que, como los demonios en Bird Box, te destruyes a ti mismo. En Bird Box los personajes destruían sus cuerpos, se suicidaban; en el mundo real el pecado destruye el alma.
Hogar: La iglesia
La gente en Bird Box generalmente está a salvo en casa, es decir, hasta que Gary llega. El hogar en este caso representa la iglesia. Cuando nos mantenemos fieles a la iglesia, cuando nos alejamos del pecado, estamos seguros dentro de Dios. Sin embargo, al igual que Gary, también hay personas que desafortunadamente han infiltrado el pecado en la iglesia, como los sacerdotes que han abusado de los fieles. Al igual que Gary, a veces han logrado destruir las vidas de las personas dentro de la Iglesia, el hogar. En contraste, está Douglas, un personaje que a veces parece intolerante, malhumorado, estricto, parecido a cómo el mundo ve las reglas de la Iglesia católica. Sin embargo, estos mandamientos liberan, dan vida, porque sin ellos, o cuando son ignorados como Douglas, corremos el riesgo de dejar que el diablo entre. También, felicito a Douglas por hacer la señal de la cruz en la película y no tener miedo de hablar contra el mal aunque le costara la vida.
La santidad de la vida
Tanto en la película Un lugar en silencio como en Bird Box, los personajes principales están embarazadas mientras atraviesan las peores situaciones post apocalípticas imaginables. La cultura de hoy diría que, a menos que esté en las mejores circunstancias (tengas mucho dinero, una carrera, puedas garantizar una vida sin sufrimiento para el niño), no deberías quedarte con el bebé. Estas mujeres se opusieron a esa idea, porque incluso en las peores situaciones, ¿quién puede garantizar que seguirá siendo así? ¿Quién puede garantizar que la vida del bebé y / o la madre será solo de sufrimiento? Incluso si hay mucho sufrimiento, no tiene que ser visto negativamente; el sufrimiento es transformador y nos fortalece. De hecho, el personaje de Sandra Bullock, Malorie, lucha más duro por mantenerse con vida debido a los niños que tiene que cuidar. Si no hubiera tenido esa fuerza de motivación, tal vez habría perecido al principio de la película.
Amor que se sacrifica
Múltiples personajes en Bird Box mostraron esfuerzos de amor sacrificial a lo largo de la película. Primero Charlie, que se lanzó a su amigo que quería obligar a los demás a ver a los demonios. Luego Douglas por morir en un intento de pelear contra Gary, que quería hacer lo mismo que el amigo de Charlie. Tom también muere para salvar a Malorie y a los niños. Todos estos actos reflejan el amor que se sacrifica de Jesús, muriendo para salvar a otros, mostrando que el amor verdadero no es solo un sentimiento, sino que desea lo mejor para los demás incluso cuando no es cómodo, incluso cuando significa morir a sí mismo.
Pájaros: Ángeles / Conciencia
En la película, los pájaros advierten a los personajes cuando los demonios están cerca. Del mismo modo, en nuestra vida los ángeles y nuestra conciencia susurran cuando estamos cerca de la ocasión del pecado, pero como los pájaros en Bird Box, muchas veces mantenemos estos susurros enjaulados o en una caja. A veces es más cómodo de esa manera, simplemente seguir lo que hacen los demás, pero seguir la corriente de la cultura e ignorar los murmullos santos puede tener resultados desastrosos.
Cuando Malorie y los niños están lo más cerca del santuario, comienzan a escuchar voces atrayentes que buscan convencerlos de que se quiten las vendas de los ojos. Cuando estamos por llegar a la victoria contra el mal, somos lo más tentados. Pero sorprendentemente, sobre las voces atrayentes, eligen seguir el canto de los pájaros, la verdadera belleza y la salvación. Cuando finalmente están a salvo, se encuentran entre los ciegos, los marginados y carentes de la sociedad que terminan siendo bendecidos. Los que habían sido pobres en los últimos años con poca comida, los que habían estado llorando por la pérdida de la mayoría de sus seres queridos, los ciegos mansos, los que tenían hambre y sed de justicia en un lugar que había sido contaminado por el mal, los niños de corazón puro, los que procuran la paz que fueron perseguidos por los que querían que vieran a los demonios, fueron bendecidos.
Bienaventurados los pobres en espíritu, pues de ellos es el reino de los cielos.
Bienaventurados los que lloran, pues ellos serán consolados.
Bienaventurados los mansos, pues ellos heredarán la tierra.
Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, pues ellos serán saciados.
Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, pues ellos recibirán misericordia.
Bienaventurados los de corazón puro, pues ellos verán a Dios.
Bienaventurados los que procuran la paz, pues ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios.
Bienaventurados aquéllos que han sido perseguidos por causa de la justicia, pues de ellos es el reino de los cielos.
Bienaventurados serán cuando los insulten y persigan, y digan todo género de mal contra ustedes falsamente, por causa de Mí.
Regocíjense y alégrense, porque la recompensa de ustedes en los cielos es grande, porque así persiguieron a los profetas que fueron antes que ustedes.
